Energy Content Schedule

A number of you have asked for an energy content schedule for the different fuels in our sales area. A schedule has been developed to obtain energy values at a glance. Although coal and fuel oil values may vary, this schedule provides the average energy content values that we use.

Product Unit of Measurement BTU* Content
Natural Gas 1 Joule (J)
1 Gigajoule (GJ)
1 Cubic Metre (M3)
1 Cubic Foot/Hour (CF)
100 Cubic Feet (CCF)
1,000 Cubic Feet (MCF)
1 Horse Power (HP)
0.0009482
948,213
35,301
1,000
100,000
1,000,000
2.545/hr
Fuel Oil # 2 - Litre (L)
# 5 - Litre (L)
36,600
39,594
Propane 1 Litre (L)
Piped Vapour (CCF)
24,197
252,000
Electricity 1 Kilowatt/Hour (KWH) 3,413
Coal 1 Ton (T) 20,000,000

* A BTU is defined as the amount of energy required to raise one pound of water one degree fahrenheit.

Conversion Factors - Energy/Heat

1 Joule = 0.000000273 kwh = exp -6 X 273 kwh

1 Gigajoule = Gj = exp +9 = exp +9 X 2.73 exp -7 = 273 x 10-9 kwh

1 Joule = 0.0009478 BTU = 9.478 exp -4 BTU

1 Gigajoule = exp +9J X 9.478 exp -4 = 947,800 BTU (~1 million)

1 Joule = 0.0002390 kcal = 2.390 exp -4 kcal

1 Gigajoule = exp +9 X 2.390 exp -4 = 239,000 kcal
